30K Lose Power in Peninsula After Severe Storms: Latest Updates
PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Over 30,000 Dominion Power customers experienced power outages Friday evening as severe storms rolled through the Peninsula and Middle Peninsula.
As of 1:30 a.m. Saturday, more than 5,000 Dominion customers were still without power in southeastern Virginia. Hampton, Newport News, and York County were the most affected areas with 1,555, 1,254, and 1,686 outages respectively. On the Middle Peninsula, Gloucester County had 1,428 customers without power.

Storm Impact and Power Outages
The severe thunderstorms caused numerous reports of downed trees and wires, and multiple crashes in James City County. In Hampton and Newport News, there were reports of wires down, and several crashes were reported in York County.
Power Outage Breakdown (10 p.m.):
- Newport News: 3,270 (previously 6,321 at 9 p.m.)
- James City County: 4,853 (5,522 at 9 p.m.)
- Matthews: 4,107 (5,443 at 9 p.m.)
- York County: 4,630 (4,613 at 9 p.m.)
- Gloucester County: 3,674 (3,602 at 9 p.m.)
- Isle of Wight County: 2,742 (3,241 at 9 p.m.)
- Hampton: 3,197 (1,367 at 9 p.m.)
- Williamsburg: 1,073 (909 at 9 p.m.)
- Poquoson: 197 (197 at 9 p.m.)
Strong thunderstorms brought wind gusts exceeding 50 mph in some areas. The Historic Triangle and surrounding Peninsula regions were under a severe thunderstorm warning earlier Friday evening.
Travel Disruptions
The Virginia Department of Transportation reported delays on Interstate 64 due to weather conditions at mile marker 239.9 in York County, affecting the east center lane, right lane, and right shoulder. Backups extended about two miles as of 9:09 p.m.
